The kids had off from school last week Thursday & Friday and this week Monday for OFYP (option flexible year plan) days since they have been keeping their grades up. However, we couldn't plan to do anything because Ashlyn had practice Thursday, a tennis tournament in Kerrville Friday and Saturday and a track meet in Junction Monday. She didn't have much fun at the tennis tournament because she went as an alternate and didn't get to play. So she sat around the Kerrville tennis courts for a day and a half doing nothing. But according to her coach, she should be happy she got to go along.... I guess! The track meet was good, though. She placed 5th in triple jump and 3rd in the 100m hurdles for the B Team. She was very happy about that. And so were we! Tuesday there was a Tennis tournament in Mason and she finally got to play in two games in doubles, the first they lost and the second, they won. What a busy few days for her!
Colten has started baseball and will be missing his first game to compete in the district Pinewood Derby in Marble Falls Saturday. Wish him luck!

Track Meet
Mason Jr High had their track meet at home yesterday, so I actually managed to go watch some of it! Ashlyn competed in triple jump and 100m hurdles. She did the triple jump before I got there and was excited to have done her personal best, but didn't place. In hurdles, though, she got 4th in her heat and 6th over all! She was so excited to place and I was very proud of her. Hurdles is kinda scary if you ask me and she made it over 10 of them in a row!

Spring Break
It was back to the real world this week after we all had a nice week off for Spring Break last week. Our fun started Monday when we headed to Enchanted Rock and met friends there to climb the rock and have a picnic lunch. It was a lot of fun and the kids enjoyed getting together with our old friends, Linette, Kayla, Ian & Aiden. They came and stayed a night with us after that and we were happy to have the company! We went on jeep rides and enjoyed the wonderful weather we had after a cold rainy week the week before.
Wednesday morning we went into Fredericksburg to take a bull to the auction and had lunch at Charlie's Golf & Grill and played a round of mini golf. When we got home, we started working in the yard to get ready for Spring and Easter. We had the kids raking in the yard, but they weren't really motivated until I said that we'd pay them if they did a good job. Well that got their brains working and they figured that if they worked enough, they might be able to buy a new Wii game they've been pining for. Let me tell you, the rakes started moving! The next morning, they were so motivated, they woke up and were dressed before 6am. Of course I told them they were crazy - it was still dark! But they still got a lot done that morning and they even hauled the stuff they raked out of the yard! John & I were impressed (and of course we had to stop at Wal-Mart on our way home from church Sunday to get their game). We also worked on mulching, composting, and planting a few new plants Thursday & Friday morning. We haven't gotten our garden planted yet, but hope to get to that this week sometime.
Friday afternoon, we packed up the truck and the old camper and headed out to meet Mom & Dad for a night of camping out in Junction. The park we stayed at was along the river and very nice. The kids enjoyed making each other dizzy in the swings they had hanging from the pecan trees, riding their bikes, and playing with other kids in the park. We also tried fishing in the river there, but had no luck. Saturday we we tried fishing at South Llano River State Park, with no luck there either! Oh well. We did get a good hike in at the park and enjoyed watching the birds from the bird blinds they had set up along the trail. I was glad we were able to go!

Colten's Program
The 2nd grade had a program at school to demonstrate the dancing skills they had learned in music and PE. It had a Texas theme and they sang Texas songs, did square dancing and the cotton-eyed-joe (for which the parents were asked to join... fun!). It was a very cute show! Colten and his little partner did very good, I thought!

In other news, Ashlyn's track meet for today got canceled due to rain (oh darn... I'll take the rain - almost 4 inches so far!) and we're not sure yet about the Tennis meet for Saturday. Looks like there will be good weather for Spring Break, though, so we should be able to do some fun stuff. Off we go...

Rain has come!
I have to say that I'm really thankful for the rain we've gotten and hope that it keeps up for awhile. We needed it badly! It was amazing how much greener Austin was than all places west of it, just from the one extra shower they got there. Hopefully things will be able to green up around here now. The brown grass/dirt and leafless trees are starting to get depressing! Nature is amazing, though. Even with as dry as it been, blooms are still trying to pop out with the warmer weather. Spring is here!
Ashlyn had her first track meet last Thursday in Cristoval and she competed in the hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. She didn't place, but was happy she wasn't last in hurdles. Mason was 2nd overall. The bad thing was, they didn't get back until Midnight that night, which made for a really tired girl Friday!
Friday, Ashlyn went to a friends' birthday party where they spent the night in a cabin way out in the middle of nowhere. She said they had lots of fun and even painted up their faces with wet iron rock to look like Indians on their ventures through the pasture. I was glad she was able to go, except that we went to a benefit for one of her classmates (who has severe scoliosis) that night without her, which was kinda weird, but oh well! We went and ate BBQ burgers there and then waited for the dance they advertised to start. Not many people were there so we went for a walk while we waited. When we got back, we noticed that parents were dropping their kids off for the dance and decided that wasn't exactly the kind of dance we were expecting... So we went home and watched a movie instead :)
Saturday after Ashlyn got home we went to the ranch rodeo in Mason where Colten was convinced that he wants to try mutton busting sometime. Unfortunately you had to have already registered to compete that night, but I guess we'll have to try that sometime....
We're all looking forward to Spring Break next week. We haven't made any set plans, but hope to do at least a few fun things. In the mean time, this week Colten has a program at School and Ashlyn has a track meet and tennis this weekend. It's going to be a busy few weeks around here!

Pinewood Derby
Friday evening was Colten's pinewood derby at Boy Scouts. Colten picked out one of his matchbox cars that he wanted it to look like and he & John went to work on it. Colten did most of the carving and sanding himself (just on the parts that didn't need the big electric saws). He was pretty nervous about the race and we told him just to have fun. But he did really awesome! He got all 1st and 2nd places during the competition and ended up tied for 2nd in his age group. Then they had a tie braker for the overall places and he managed to get 3rd. He was super excited. Now we will be going to the district derby somewhere near Llano soon. That's sure to be an adventure!
