Another one finally..

So I know I'm bad about posting now, but still trying to keep up somewhat, so here's a quick overview:

Christmas was great, and went by too fast as usual. Ashlyn had another 24 hr EEG where it was determined her meds were keeping here seizure activity 95% controlled. Meds were increased and doctor feels like it will be taken care of. We are praying that he's right!

We had the stock show during the holidays so that made it go by especially fast. Both kids got 4th place with their pigs. We ended up leaving one at home because it was sick. Then we didn't even go to Kerrville because our only well pig wasn't that great. Not worth getting a motel room and going there so we stayed home and had Colten's birthday party instead. We actually had it the week of his birthday which I don't think has ever happened. Colten also started basketball that weekend, it was busy! He's definitely getting in there more after having been in football. They had 2 games in a row and won both of them, and he even made a basket. It was pretty :)

Colten got brackets on his teeth this week. Next week, he gets 2 teeth pulled and after that, they'll install the wire. Same day that he got them, Ashlyn tested positive for flu so now we're waiting for the next victim (well after Rena, she already got it, sorry...)

One Year

Amazing how much life can change in a year. Last Thursday, the 25th, marked one year since Ashlyn had her first seizure. We went from terrified about what caused it, to hopeful it was a fluke, to realizing it wasn't and we needed to be super careful and then to wondering if we'd ever get it under control. Still hoping we do. So far this medicine she's on now seems ok, just hope it's working! Craziness.

In other news, today we are going to Brownwood again to watch Colten and his team in a playoff game. If they win today, they'll play 2 more games, if not, this will be the last one. Not sure which I'd rather happen lol.

John has been busy bulldozing and he's really been cleaning up all over the place, but his efforts have been hampered by cluster headaches almost everyday for the past 2 weeks. He's given up on getting 40 hours a week on the dozer for the month it's rented, what with the headaches and the kids activities and everything else he has to do. Oh well, he's close enough I think.

Dr. Visit

Ashlyn had a dr appt last week to see how she has been doing with her new medicine. So far they want to keep things as they are (only 1.5 pills every night) and see how it goes. They also wanted to schedule another EEG (only 24 hrs this time) to see if the medicine is working. So we now have that scheduled for Dec 26-27. It's not the best time, but it's while she's out of school and we've already met her deductible for the year, so BONUS. Hoping they see it's working so she has a chance to start driving again soon.

Other than that, Colten's football is moving right along. He's had 4 games (one was rained out) and they are currently 2-2. They have a game scheduled this weekend and we're hearing we'll make up the cancelled one and then after that is playoffs. He's still learning, but is having fun, so that's good. He also had a camp out with the boy scouts last weekend and he said it was fun even though he missed a lot of it due to his football game.

The kids are doing good in school so far this year, both had 1 B and the rest A's on the first report card so I was happy. Ashlyn is scheduled to take the SAT in Dec and ACT in Feb and is starting to study for those. Fun fun.

Another one....

Just wanted to let y'all know that Ashlyn had another seizure today. She was in art class and it happened right at the end of class. She must have been in the back of the room where she usually doesn't go and the teacher managed to catch her before she fell down. She did hit her head though. I called the dr and hadn't heard back yet but they did mention she could have breakthrough seizures while we're changing the meds. Hopefully that's all that was. She's feeling fine now just tired and sore. Fortunately she's been doing much better on the new medicine as far as side affects, just hope it works now!

Football

Colten had his first football game this weekend. Unfortunate Ashlyn and I missed it, but we went to fiesta Texas with Jayde for her 16th bday so we did have fun! They win the game 30-0! And Ashlyn did great on the rides at fiesta tx even thought I didn't let her go on upside down rides until the very end ( I was very paranoid about something bad happening to her and just wanted to have a good day, sooooo very thankful the day went by without an issue!!)

Changes

Well, finally the doctor understood our concerns, especially after Ashlyn told him she would rather have the seizures than have the side affects of the meds she was on! So glad we were persistent with him. He's taking her off all of her current meds and starting her on one (yes ONE) new med (depakote) that she only has to take once a day. Dr says the side affects could be upset stomach (which she's already been having) and sleepiness (Ashlyn was excited about this). And she only has to take it once a day in the evening. The reason they didn't give her this med to begin with is because it can cause birth defects so they are going to start her on a folic acid supplement already to keep her supply up since it depletes it in your body and this is the main cause of the birth defects. Then once she is ready to have kids, she'll have to work closely with the doctors to make sure all is going well. We'll have to watch her closely as she'll stop taking the new meds completely tomorrow and start her new med tonight. The only one we have to take her off slowly is the lamotrigine. 
OK, sure hope this one works out!!!!

Doctors

I think we finally got through to the doctor what was going on, after calling them twice and sending a chart and them still telling us to increase the first medicine and stop the second, even though the problems started when we increased the first. ugh. We have an appointment with them on Tuesday now so hopefully we can get it straightened out. In the mean time, Ashlyn has been feeling somewhat better and Emily miraculously finished her weighted blanket in 4 days and it's been helping her sleep. Here is the finished product - it weighs 15.8 lbs!
